From the modern architecture to the colorful shanty towns; the smoky street food to the enormous bandeja paisa dish; the meaningful public spaces to the progressive transportation systems- Medellin is currently going through somewhat of a renaissance period and is quickly becoming one of the most important (and exciting) cities in all of South America.

When this crazy idea of world travel popped into my head, the first place that I thought of spending a significant amount of time in was Medellin, Colombia. Maybe it’s from the recent hype, or possibly from a short 2-day visit I made in 2014, but I knew I wanted to get back there, spend some quality time and dive deep into the culture. I would end up living there for over a month, renting an apartment in the non-touristic neighborhood of Laureles, frequenting the same breakfast joint almost every morning, taking private Spanish lessons from Diana and basically living like a local for five weeks.

In the end, I fell in love the Paisa people and their beautiful city. I learned so much about their tumultuous and sometimes violent history, but was privileged enough to witness some grand changes taking place, creating a Medellin focused on growth and security; full of happy people and a rich and vibrant culture. No wonder so many foreigners are moving there from all over the world; it’s a modern paradise.
